If your home has high levels of moisture within the air, this can cause problems for you and your home. High humidity can lead to increase in growth of molds which can be bad for your health. A small appliances called a dehumidifier (or luftbefeuchter in Germany as I found out) can help to reduce the levels of moisture in the air.
However, if you are finding yourself always running a dehumidifier, you may want to get your home looked at for structural problems. Alternatively, if you are searching for a new home to buy, finding any existing mold problems is important before you take the keys.
When buying a new home, you should be aware of any smells within the home. Smells are always a good sign that there is a mold problem within the home. Even if you just smell bleach, this could be a sign that the owners are trying to remove the mold.
Often mold creates a very musty smell around the house, particularly in the bathrooms and basements as these are rooms where a lot of moisture is created.
A university in America is currently building a new system which would allow you to monitor the air quality in a specified area of your town. Although this system only works for outside air quality, you could get a vague idea of what it’s like inside. Generally if the air quality outside is poor then this can often spread into the houses in the surrounding area.
Unfortunately this system is just in testing and it would involve sensors placed around the area to monitor the air quality. Alternatively, while you are house hunting, you could get a thermo-hygrometer to monitor the air quality.
If you currently have a problem with high moisture levels in your home, a dehumidifier is one way to combat it. However, if you ignore the problem, it can spread around the home can potentially cause structural problems. Resolving issues caused by molds can be costly, and if they are not looked at quickly, they can cause damage to your health.
It’s odd, as I was researching for this article, I found lots of foreign equivalents. It’s strange hour the Mexican work for dehumidifiers, humidificadores, and the same word in French, humidificateurs, can be almost the same whereas the German, luftbefeuchter, is nothing like the others.
