More and more people are finding themselves affected by the devastating power of floods over the last 5 years. This has largely been blamed on the changing climate and the green house gas problems that have been caused by humans.A similar stance has now been taken by the government who have said that people will find themselves taking more responsibility for damage done to their possessions as a result of floods.
One of the biggest issues people face is getting home and office insurance to cover them against damages. Previously this has not been such a problem as Association of British Insurers (ABI) made a promise to ensure that most properties could get cover. However, this promise was only valid until 2013, and there seems to be no move to make another promise from the ABI any time soon. This could leave thousands of homes and business without protection and could mean that the value of the properties takes a massive hit.
The area of the country that will be most affected by this change will be London. A great deal more areas of the capital have been categories as high risk over the last 5 years and this trend it set to continue. London relies heavily on its Victorian drainage system and much of the ground is flat. Also, because much of the ground is impermeable and has not plant life the water has difficulty draining away. The river bank defences around the Thames have only added to this problem by stopping the water in the city from being able to filter into the river as it should.
The government has said that if people cannot get home or liability insurance quotes relating to protection against floods any more, they will need to take measures to protect themselves against damages. One dentist in the capital has already take measures into his own hands and bought a large force pump after not being able to get full dentists insurance.
